Getting Your 50cc or 125cc Moped Fit For The Road
Spring is almost here in the UK, and it’s about time to get your scooter or moped and check that it is roadworthy for the coming riding season.
For many people, particularly those without an background in engineering or mechanics, this can seem like a daunting prospect. But here at mopeds for sale will run down a few of the simple tips that will help you get this job done.
First of all, (and this may seem a little late), you did leave your scooter or moped somewhere secure for the winter didn’t you?
Although rain will have little effect on your bike, a build-up of snow which takes many days or weeks to clear gradually corrode much of the exposed metalwork, and for this reason alone, it is best to keep your scooter in doors, in a garage or shed etc.
Some people are inclined to keep their moped or scooter under a tarpaulin outside. And while this is a good short-term measure, it does have some drawbacks. In the Spring in particular when the nights are cold but the days can be quite warm, there is often the chance of condensation building up underneath the tarpaulin. Moisture from the ground will be drawn up inside and then will be trapped. It will have nowhere to go and nothing to do other than corrode any exposed metalwork. So while the tarpaulin maybe a good choice in the depths of winter, as soon as the weather starts to warm up a little I would remove it.
Okay, so you have got your scooter out. Whether it’s a 50cc or 125cc machine or even larger, the first thing you need to do is check that it starts. The chances are, even a well-behaved moped or scooter will struggle the first time you try and turn it over in the New Year. Don’t worry about this. It may take 10 to 15 second blast on the starter button to get it to go.
If you have a kick-start machine you may have rather sore legs by the time you got your bike finally started. Only if your bike refuses to start after many attempts should you seek to find out more sinister fault with the machine.
The two main areas to look at here are fuel and battery.
First of all make sure the bike has sufficient petrol, and that the battery, which is often situated just underneath the seat, has charged. Your rider’s manual should show you how this is done.
If you’re moped or scooter has little or no charge, you may need to remove the battery and charge it yourself. If you do not have a battery charger “beg borrow or steal” one from a neighbour for the purpose. It’s something that you will use very infrequently and not really worth the time or effort never mind the cost of sourcing one for yourself.
If you have no fuel in your scooter or moped, this poses a problem of how to get fuel to it. Perhaps you could siphon one from another vehicle you have, or take a fuel can to your local petrol station and fill up there. The rules about the size and shape of can you are allowed to use on the forecourt of the petrol station in the UK so be very careful, it may be you have to buy one there, and they tend to cost £5-£6 each.
Assuming your scooter or moped does start, let it tick over for a minimum of 15 minutes. This will help to recharge the battery from any exertions you have put on it while starting machine, as well as blow the cobwebs away.
